Community & Pro Bono

Stikeman Elliott's Community Involvement Program

Ensuring that we give back to our communities has always been a foundational value at Stikeman Elliott. To affirm our commitment to giving back, we formally established our Community Involvement Program in 2008. This unique and innovative program was designed to encourage firm member volunteerism at all levels.

We have been able to achieve this by building on
three key pillars of our grassroots initiative:

1

Offering matching donations programs
2

Supporting individuals who champion for causes that are meaningful to them
3

Providing invaluable pro bono legal advice

As we mark the 11th anniversary of this program, we are proud to share that Stikeman Elliott and its dedicated firm members have given back more than $20M since the inception of this program in 2008.

“At Stikeman Elliott we believe that our passion and creativity should also serve the communities in which we live and work. We do this largely through local drive and grassroots dedication, as can be seen from multiple initiatives throughout our offices that focus on community needs identified by them. I am proud of what we have accomplished and how this reflects that giving back is a part of what we are at Stikeman Elliott. To paraphrase one of our founders, Heward Stikeman, we believe that as we grow and succeed, we must continue to express the best that is in us, in the service of others."

Our matching donations programs create a larger impact in our communities

Stikeman Elliott recognizes individual volunteerism with monetary donations. The firm will leverage its matching donations program to donate for every hour of volunteer work completed by staff, law clerks, associates, and articling students. The firm will also make a monetary donation in recognition of firm members who sit on charitable boards and who also make a financial contribution to the same charity.

Individuals can champion causes that are meaningful to them

Firm members who choose to participate in charitable fundraising campaigns have the support of the firm, both in organizing campaigns and encouraging involvement from other firm members. We provide such support as team t-shirts, the use of boardroom space, providing refreshments and covering registration fees for individuals who organize fundraising activities. In the last eleven years, Stikeman Elliott firm members have supported over 250 charitable organizations.

For the past eight years, Stikeman Elliott firm members have formed a team to participate in the Ride to Conquer Cancer cycling event in support of the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. To date, the Stikeman Elliott team has raised over $1M. As a further example, in conjunction with AUDEAMUS and theCanadian Legacy Project, Stikeman Elliott firm members banded together and raised enough funds to provide two service dogs to two very deserving Canadian veterans.

Pro Bono work allows us to lend our expertise to worthy causes

Providing legal services for charitable and not for profit associations, especially those devoted to access to justice, education, youth, and the arts is a crucial part to our Community Involvement Program. We have worked alongside and lent our forward-thinking expertise to such organizations as; First Nations Child & Family Caring SocietyPlan CanadaAutism Society CanadaSainte-Justine Hospital Foundation,  Sierra Club Canada Foundation (Ontario) and Variety – The Children’s Charity of Alberta, to name a few.

Firm sponsored initiatives

In addition to our grassroots program, the firm also gives back to our communities through firm sponsored initiatives. From time to time, our Executive Committee will decide to match firm members’ donations to select campaigns, dollar for dollar, to a maximum of $500 per person per campaign. Over the years, matching donations campaigns have been established for such causes as the Humboldt Broncos Hockey Team, Toronto Strong Fund, Alberta Floods Fund, B.C. Wildfires, and the Syrian Humanitarian Crisis Emergency Relief Fund. Through firm sponsored fundraising activities across the country, Stikeman Elliott firm members have also given more than $5M over the last eight years toUnited Way Centraide Canada.

Our matching donations programs, support of individuals championing for causes, and undertaking pro bono work are the three key pillars of our firm’s Community Involvement Program. With these in mind, Stikeman Elliott can effect real change – locally and nationally, both in and out of the boardroom.

The 11th anniversary of our Community Involvement Program is a significant accomplishment, one we are determined to build upon. We will continue to follow our passion and commitment to give back to the communities where we live and work.
